I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE – THE AMERICAN FLAG OF FREEDOM AND THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS

As far back as 1892, school children throughout America have recited a Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag and the republic for which it stands. In 1892, the magazine “Youth’s Companion” led a celebration of the 400th Anniversary of Columbus’s voyage to America.  At that time, the words to the pledge were written by either Francis Bellamy or James Upham.  The Pledge then stated, “I Pledge Allegiance to my flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”  Today, the Flag Code includes the Pledge of Allegiance and the manner in which it should be delivered. The Pledge is to be “rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.”

In 1942 Congress officially recognized the Pledge of Allegiance. (At that time, our nation was united in the defense of freedom during World War II)

In June of 1954, an amendment was made which added the words “Under God” to the Pledge by Act of Congress.  On that occasion, President Dwight Eisenhower explained:

“In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America’s heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country’s most powerful resource in peace and war.”

I am inspired by the fact that George Washington who led the American troops through the successful War for Independence also led our nation in the call to never forget the Divine Providence that so richly blessed our people in the cause of liberty.  So too, it is also inspiring to recognize that General Eisenhower similarly acknowledged “our country’s most powerful resource in peace and war.”  He witnessed the hand of Providence that sustained the Allied troops on D-Day as they stormed the beaches and liberated France and Europe.  This ultimately resulted in the victorious conclusion of World War II.  After the war and as President, his support was instrumental in the passage of the clear and unmistakable public affirmation of what is now our national motto, “In God We Trust.”  The Pledge of Allegiance reflects that faith and public expression of continuing trust in our Creator who has truly blessed America.
